So we all know that the nutrients of food are the building blocks of good health. But careless handling or improper preparation can also cause nutrient losses. This really means that you can eat a good food which lost most of its nutrients and are really worthless.
Did you know that:
- Milk bottled in clear glass loses up to 75% of its riboflavin within three and a half hours of exposure to direct sunlight
- 25% of thiamin is lost when meat is cooked
- 50% of vitamins can be lost when cooking liquid is discarded
- There is a slight loss of linoleic acid (an essential fatty acid) and considerable loss of vitamin E when oils are used for frying
Facts like these always makes me wonder how much I do know about providing my family with a healthy, nutrient rich meal. And you?
